evening, everyone. i'm ashleigh banfield in for erin burnett. a deadly shooting in a crowded shopping mall in a suburb of oregon. three people including the gunman are confirmed dead. one other is in critical condition. the authorities say the gunman died of a self inflicted gunshot and that no shots were fired by law enforcement. we have new video taken from inside of the mall. look at the scene as police were clearing this mall and evacuating some of the frightened shoppers to safety. many of them holding their hands above their heads and holding their children at the same time. witnesses are describing a scene of complete chaos as the shots rang out near the food court in the mall 3.30 p.m. local time. there are reports that the shooter was wearing a flak jacket and hockey mask as he moved throughout the mall firing an assault rifle. outside of macy's, gunshots echoed where a man was portraying santa clause in the santa village and taking photos with kids an he heard two gunshots and 15 to 16 more and immediately he said he hit the floor amidst all of these kids. the clackamas county sh

of the connecticut school shooting continues. erin burnett "outfront" starts right now. >>> good evening. breaking news. i'm ashleigh banfield in for erin burnett tonight. in newtown, connecticut, it is the scene of one of the worst school shootings in the history of the united states and we can report for you that police have now identified a school shooter as adam lanza. a shooter who killed 26 people today at the sandy hook elementary school here in this small connecticut town. 20 children were killed. 18 of them were pronounced dead right at the scene of the school. two of them were rushed to the hospital, hoping that they could save them. those children died at the hospital. six adults at the school were also shot dead. and they died at the scene as well. nancy lanza, a teacher at the school and a mother of the suspected shooter, was also killed. but she was found dead in her son's home in newtown. adam lanza, the 24-year-old brother ryan lanza, was taken into police custody. ryan lanza taken into police custody for questioning in hoboken, new jersey, earlier today. officials had not labeled

in south korea. we have this just in from our erin burnett who is not doing this show tonight because she is traveling with the secretary of defense. and the defense department acknowledged the missile launch, the statement goes on to say north american aerospace command officials tracked the launch at 7:49 p.m. eastern time. initial indications are the first stage fell to the yellow sea. the second stage was assessed to fall in to the philippines sea. initial indications are that the missile deployed an object that appeared to achieve orbit. again, appeared to achieve orbit. at no time was the missile or the debris 'threat to north america. i want to go to my colleague barbara starr, our pentagon correspondent who is live on the phone. clearly this has to set off the alarm bells within the pentagon staff. >> reporter: oh, i think there is no way around it. this is huge news. that one little sentence you just read, initial indications are the missile deployed an object that appeared to achieve orbit, the north koreans had been trying for years to put a satellite in to space by all indicat

thanks on behalf of all of us. >>> good evening. breaking news. i'm ashleigh banfield in for erin burnett tonight. i can tell you his mother nancy lanza was found dead at the family home here in newtown, as well. she had been a teacher at the sandy hook elementary school. the school's principal dawn hochsprung was among those killed and tonight a friend remembered her as "quote, the kind of person you would want to be educating your kids. school psychologist mary sherlock was also kilged. this afternoon afternoon the brother, ryan lanza was taken in for questioning by police and he was handcuffed. officials did not label him a suspect. the gunman's father was also questioned in relation to what happened here today. tonight, a nation in mourning. candle light vigils were held in newtown and across the country. there was one just outside of the white house in washington, d.c. earlier today, president obama ordered flags to be flown at half staff nationwide in tribute to the victims of this terrible tragedy. in an emotional address, he said this to the nation. >> i know there's not a parent
